Aromantic*
(Alternate Title: Schrödinger’s Romantic)
I keep wondering if “aromantic” is really a good word to describe my romantic orientation. I have plenty of reasons for why it is, but also plenty of reasons for why it might not be. Schrödinger’s romantic.
In order to know whether you experience romantic attraction or not, you first have to have a solid definition of what romantic attraction is. A definition which is clear, and also distinct from other forms of emotional attraction. I don’t think such a definition exists, or at least, it’s not commonplace.
“Romantic attraction: attraction that makes people desire romantic contact or interaction with another person or persons.” - UNC Chapel Hill LGBT Center
But what is romantic contact or interaction? Is it contact which is culturally considered romantic? In that case, the ways in which romantic attraction is defined would vary by culture, and even by gender. Or is it contact which one intends to be romantic? That would make sense, but is incredibly subjective. How do you know where to draw the line? What if you haven’t drawn one?
“[Romantic attraction] involves a combination of physical, sexual, and emotional feelings toward someone.” - WebMD
This definition is ridiculously vague, especially for a page which defines multiple other types of attraction in relation to romance. What physical feelings? What sexual feelings? What emotional feelings? What about alloromantic asexual people, or other varioriented people, who don’t necessarily experience sexual feelings as part of their romantic feelings?
But the article also defines aromanticism as “when you don’t have any desire for a romantic relationship,” so I can’t count on it for accuracy regardless.
“Romantic attraction is the internal pull that you experience when you are with someone with whom you internally feel connected, comfortable and interested in spending more of your life with.” - Choosing Therapy
Do people not feel connected to their friends? Do people not feel comfortable with their friends? Are people not interested in spending more of their life with their friends? Why else would people find time to connect with their friends, to confide in them, to engage with them? What about these feelings is distinctly romantic?
The article goes on to say this:
“Romantic relationships are relationships intentionally initiated and maintained for experiencing sexual and romantic feelings together, whereas platonic relationships are usually centered on another purpose like hobbies, friendship, support, work, etc. Romantic relationships can also include these purposes as well, but the platonic relationship excludes the romance and sexual feelings.” - Choosing Therapy
I ask again, what about alloaces and other varioriented people? What about people who have sex with their friends? Even when it’s taboo, it’s not unheard of. The distinction can’t be sex, so it has to be romance. So, what is romance?
Later in the article, it defines romance once again:
“Romantic attraction: The internal pull that draws your attention to the other person’s positive qualities, and your internal reaction to connect, love, share and spend time with them to have more romance.” - Choosing Therapy
I feel like I’m running in circles here. People draw their attention to the positive qualities of not just romantic interests, but to friends, family, and other people with whom they’d have no romantic interest. Connection, love, and spent time are not exclusive to romance either. If the goal is to have more romance… What is that?
Every answer I find fails to say what romance is on its own. The definitions always rely on presence or absence of sex, or other things which can just as easily be present in platonic or otherwise non-romantic contexts. Romantic attraction is consistently defined by things which are not distinctly romantic.
Is it even a real thing? I mean, I feel like it’s clearly not, but it’s also clearly very real to most people. Most people don’t think about it this hard. It’s like they were given a manual that I can never possess. It comes naturally to them. They feel romantic attraction, and they know, intuitively, that that’s what it is.
Is my lack of intuition evidence that I don’t experience romantic attraction, or am I just autistic? Maybe it’s both. When I described to my aunts my emotional attraction, they described my way of experiencing and perceiving attraction as very “intellectual,” which I initially rejected. But I think they were right. I lack the intuition to understand my feelings in any way that doesn’t involve a literal or metaphorical chart. It’s something I can’t just feel and then know like other people do.
Is romantic attraction always a “you’ll know it when you feel it” sort of thing? It seems like it. Even when I search “romantic attraction” on Google, many results either come from queer Fandom Wiki pages, discussions amongst a-spec people, Reddit, or Quora. Some results aren’t even relevant to the question, including multiple results which just describe what “aromantic” means. The opposite of what I intended to search for.
The thing is, I do have feelings which would likely be perceived as romantic to most people. I have a deep desire for commitment and companionship. To touch and be touched. To love and be loved. To be emotionally and physically intimate with other people. To feel the warmth of other people as we lay in bed together. To live out our mundane lives together. Things that most people would find incredibly romantic.
But are these things romantic if I don’t explicitly intend for them to be? Is it romantic for me to be open to it being romantic, without actively wanting that?
When I’ve described my feelings online, I’ve gotten mixed responses from other people, but I’ve generally been given similar advice from different strangers, and similar labels thrown at me, even when I hadn’t asked for advice or labels.
“I think you’d enjoy a queerplatonic relationship.”
“You might be cupioromantic.”
“You might be bellusromantic.”
And I can understand where they’re coming from. I don’t think they’re entirely wrong, either. I would enjoy a queerplatonic relationship… But not for any reason that wouldn’t apply to other committed relationship types. Queerplatonic relationships, platonic relationships, romantic relationships, and whatever else there is are the same to me in all but label.
Cupioromanticism is something I have considered. I made the flag for it when I was 15 years old as well (yes, the peach one with five stripes; I always asked to be credited anonymously), so I’m biased towards liking the flag. But the definition is “being aromantic, and also wanting a romantic relationship.”
I don’t specifically want a romantic relationship, but I do want committed relationships in general, and romantic relationships are included in that. So, maybe?
Bellusromantic is something I have also considered, and it also has a pretty flag. But I think it’s less accurate than cupioromantic. The definition is “being aromantic, and enjoying traditionally romantic things, but not wanting a romantic relationship (or not wanting a committed relationship, depending on the definition used).”
I do enjoy traditionally romantic things in a way which is not explicitly romantic, and I don’t explicitly want a romantic relationship. But I’m not opposed to romantic relationships, and I do explicitly want committed relationships.
I took some aro-spec tests, and my results had a tendency to skew towards cupioromantic, bellusromantic, and quoiromantic. Quoiromantic is another orientation which I have considered, and it might be the most accurate.
Quoiromantic is also aptly known as “whatromantic” or “WTFromantic” because the defining trait is that romantic attraction as a concept doesn’t make sense to you.
“[Quoiromantic], also known as [whatromantic] or [WTFromantic], is a [romantic] orientation defined by confusion, vagueness, and/or obscurity. A [quoiromantic] person may not understand or relate to the concepts of [romantic] attraction and/or [romantic] orientation. [Quoiromanticism] may involve confusion related to what [romance] is, whether or not one experiences [romantic attraction], and how to differentiate it from other forms of attraction. [Quoiromanticism] can also feel blurry and unclear, and may center around general confusion around one's identity and attraction. It can also refer to a lack of identification with [romantic] orientation as a concept, and can additionally serve as a label for people who cannot fit into more specific identities. [Quoiromanticism] can also refer to when one does not experience [romantic] attraction in a "traditional" manner. It is sometimes used as a catch-all term for people who know they're somewhere on the [aromantic] spectrum, but aren't sure where.” - An LGBTQIA+ Wiki (originally about quoisexuality; I changed some words.)
In a similar vein, pomoromantic (“pomo” being literally taken from “postmodern”) would also fit. My romantic orientation exists from a post-romantic perspective, where romance is understood to be made up bogus which isn’t actually fundamentally different from any other form of emotional connection.
“[Pomoromanticism] is defined as refusing, avoiding, or not fitting any [romantic] orientation label in terms of conventional labels or classifications, such as gay, lesbian, [biromantic], or [aromantic]. It challenges categorizations in favor of largely unmapped possibility and the intense charge that comes with transgression. Some [pomoromantic] people may be queer or questioning, and others may not be.” - Another LGBTQIA+ Wiki (originally about pomosexuality; I changed some words.)
But at that point, is it even worth labeling my romantic orientation? Should I just be bisexual/omnisexual? Maybe with a little asterisk at the end? Does any of this matter? Am I thinking too much? (I am.)
I think that continuing to identify as aromantic will probably close me off to potential relationships. I feel like the word gives people the wrong idea. At the same time, the way that I think about romance is fundamentally different than the way other people tend to, and I do consider my aromanticism to be a notable part of who I am and how I experience the world. Maybe I should just send this to whoever ends up being a potential partner. Probably more useful than any label.
#I originally typed this up as a google doc#and then I decided I wanted to put it here too#especially with the other posts I've been making lol#side note: the cupioromantic flag might be the flag I'm most proud of making. it's a really pretty flag#I originally shared it in an LGBTQ+ discord server in 2020#very happy every time I see people use it#except for Pride Palace because FUCK Pride Palace.#they started selling the cupioromantic pride flag I made and I AM NOT happy about it lol#I'm fine with people using the flag for commercial reasons but I REALLY don't like Pride Palace#I'm not about to ask them to stop selling it though.#just know that their “free flags” are a SCAM and the reviews are obviously fake if you look at the ones on their website#and they're obviously just trying to cash into the LGBTQ+ community without knowing anything about us#anyway cupioromantic pride flag rant = over. tag time#aspec#aromantic#aro#arospec#aro spec#aro spectrum#aromantic spectrum#aromanticism#aromanticity#quoiromantic#cupioromantic#bellusromantic#pomoromantic#queerplatonic#questioning#unlabeled#lgbt

Cu-wip-osity tag game ~
I think if I don't go through with this I think that PK will murder me (/j) so
rules: reveal the titles of the documents in your WIP folder and tag as many people as there are documents. let others ask questions about the ones that interest them, and post snippets or explain the contents as you see fit!
Tagging: I,,, i don't want to tag people yet, I don't like taging people and idk who hasn't done this yet, BUT if you haven't and want to, this is your tag I promise and double dog dare you.
The problem with this is I usually have very basic doc titles for wips cause like I don't want to put that much effort into something that may or may not get posted. but here they are anyway.

Fic Writer Tag
Thanks @infinitevariety for the tag! And @tastymoves too, sorry I forgot to do this before!
How many works do you have on AO3?
19
What’s your total AO3 word count?
48389
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Good Omens and Spider-Man on here
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
We Made a Garden of the Love We Found - 262
The Light Slipping Through - 249
Empty (More) - 199
Milkshake - 199
Yours Is the First Face That I Saw - 172
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yes! I love getting comments and I try to show my appreciation by responding. Sometimes I'm very slow to get back to people though 😬
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I mostly avoid angst, especially angsty endings, especially especially for Good Omens. I guess the ending to my Doc Ock/Spider-Man fic (Pinned) could be seen as angsty but I purposefully left that story and its ending open to multiple interpretations
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
Never done any and I don't know if I ever will. If an idea hits me hard enough I could give it a try
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
I've gotten some rude comments but they were mild compared to what I've seen some others get. I just deleted them. I don't have time for people being assholes on stories I'm writing and sharing for free with my limited energy
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Lmao yep, nearly all my fics are smut! I think I tend to write pretty fluffy smut, combined with a lot of kinky stuff. I really love writing aftercare
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
No not that I'm aware of
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope not yet
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! Sway @tastymoves and I wrote You Spin Me Right Round. It was so much fun to collab, I'd love to do it again!
What’s your all time favourite ship?
Ineffable Partners 😌
Actually my favorite interpretation of them is as queerplatonic partners but I rarely write that because it feels more difficult to write the thing I care about most. There's a level of disconnect for me as an aspec person writing romantic+sexual relationships that makes it easier somehow to be able to put words down. Within the context of fic, it feels like I'm playing games with these characters and very few of the fics I write reflect my "true" headcanons (or they do, but only pieces)
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
The one about Aziraphale recovering from trauma from Heaven. That one's a little too real :/ Maybe someday I'll feel able to pick it up again
What are your writing strengths?
Oof here comes the interview questions.
I've been told I wrote hot smut which is incredibly gratifying. I think I'm also good at combining humor and smut. It's too much fun taking something ridiculous and treating it a little too seriously.
What are your writing weaknesses?
I don't use a lot of description because it often doesn't occur to me to describe surroundings. A lot of the time I forget to describe clothing and then if I need to talk about clothes at some point in the fic, I have to read back through and see if I need to add any other details about how they're dressed earlier on. I think it's because I have a pretty vague/blurry visual imagination and most of the time when I'm reading or writing I'm paying most attention to dialogue + emotions + movement. But I could probably do a better job of giving characters a background/setting to interact with
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I've never done it. If I come across it in other stories I don't usually look up translations, so I appreciate if authors include translations. Sometimes I'm able to make an educated guess at what they're saying based on context and/or how common those words are and if I have a little familiarity with the language to recognize some vocab
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Good Omens!
What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
Nooo I can't pick a favorite! My fics are all special to me in different ways and I have different memories and emotions attached to each of them. Does the deep nostalgia I feel for one outweigh the laughter another brings me? Do I say that I love one fic more than another because it reflects more of me, or because a friend said some very nice things about that one, or because I think I accomplished what I set out to do with this one?
Seriously don't ask me to pick favorites of almost anything, I'm just Like This, I have very few definitively favorite things in most categories. I do have a favorite food though.
(Also please don't interpret the above as me saying that I think I'm some perfect writer and have no flaws. I try to be deliberate about not openly disparaging my work or being negative about the things I create. I have to fight that impulse all the time and it's very important for my mental health that I make an effort to believe my creative efforts are worthwhile even if they're filled with errors or I didn't convey something the way I'd hoped to in my head. It still matters that I took the time to do it. And I'm not gonna apologize for saying that I love every single fic I've written and they are all significant to me in different ways.)
Tagging
I'm not sure who all has been tagged and done this by now, I know I've seen this game shared around several times but I can't keep track of the way it's spiderwebbed across here. So if you haven't been tagged yet and want to be, consider this me tagging you :)

Is “aspec” an autistic term?
Recently, along with the "ace discourse" that started up a few years ago, this is a huge question that many people have had. Unfortunately, the discourse on this never really died down. So let's take a look at this.
(Most of it is under the cut for a quicker-to-read version, but you can see the full Google doc here.)
I started my search by trying to find sources that were NOT Tumblr or Twitter. The first one is an autism forum. Pictured is the poll conducted on the thread, and a few of the comments left in response to the question "Have you used the term 'aspec' for the autism spectrum?"
No one there thought "aspec" was meant for autistics, so I also searched on urbandictionary (which can be a wildcard, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to check). Only 1 of the 5 definitions said anything about autism, and it wasn't posted until 2019.
I searched on Reddit next, and there was only ONE post that had the term "aspec" referring to the autistic community. The majority of posts on Reddit were about cars or other unrelated things.
Facebook was next. You can look at the Google doc link for more screenshots (many were from private groups and though I blocked out names, I want to be able to easily remove them just in case), but here are some of the public posts on the matter:
In summary, from Facebook there were about 108 total comments/posts/replies/etc. by autistic people, and of those 108, there were 7 people who had seen “aspec” used as an autistic term. NONE of them had a problem with it being used for the ace/aro community.
There are TONS of screenshots from Tumblr. So I'll just include some of the more thorough ones, but you can see more on the Google doc. This first one, by autistic-kitten, disputes the argument that the idea of a "spectrum" can be stolen at all.
From autistic-answers, we have another post talking about how the ace/aro community using the term "aspec" does NOT hurt the autistic community, and it lists things that /do/ hurt the community.
This next post has a response by rhodanum, who mentions they've been active in the autistic community for 15 years and never heard "aspec" used as an autistic term. They are just one person, but this type of statement has been made by countless other autistic people.
Then there's a post by historicallyace, in which they link to other posts that show how the discourse may have started-- autistic people asked aces/aros to not use the phrase "on the spectrum," but /suggested/ using "aspec" for the ace/aro community instead.
In the responses to that post, some people reblogged with the results of their searches, in which they found that they couldn't find any posts prior to the overall "ace discourse" where the autistic community used "aspec."
In that response, they link to another post where autistic people were discussing who coined the term. Two separate people, one being autistic and the other representing a group of three people (two were autistic), both claimed having coined the term "aspec" specifically for the ace/aro spectrums. These screenshots show that discussion.
It's not pictured in this thread (but you can find it in the Google doc), but one autistic person on Facebook also made a similar claim. All were very clear that they meant for "aspec" to be ace/aro spectrum.
That SHOULD be enough evidence, but I gathered much more anyway. This next post is by a Tumblr user who tried to find proof of "aspec" being used to describe the autistic community before the discourse, and they were not able to find anything.
They were open to responses, but none of the responses contradicted their findings.
There were only two posts by autistic people who didn't want the ace/aro community to use the term "aspec." However, one has the word "aphobe" in their username and likely doesn't care about the ace/aro community overall, and the other was unnecessarily rude in their post.
(The second image here was what was posted with the second post.)

Tumblr aside, I also found there's a group called "Aspect" in Australia, which is for the autism community. I don't know anything about whether this is a good/reliable group at all, but there may be a possibility of regional differences in language based on this group.
Lastly, I have a bunch of Twitter posts about the issue. These first two are separate, but I'll upload them together.
In this next one, the OP isn't autistic and tried to spread what they had heard about aspec being an autistic phrase, and lots of autistic people corrected them in the replies.
Another user made a poll asking the ActuallyAutistic tag if they had seen "aspec" used as an autistic term. These are the results and a few comments.
And here are a few more posts/comments by autistic people:
I tried to count up everything I included in the doc, and there were about 247 comments/replies/etc. about the issue. Of those, only 6 (about 2.5%) people had a problem with aces/aros using the term "aspec" Now please stop spreading rumors.
It's pretty clear that an overwhelming majority of the autistic community does not use "aspec" or at least does not care if the ace/aro community shares this term with the autistic community. I am also autistic myself, and everyone I know thinks this is BS.
Again, here's the link to the full Google doc, which has more screenshots/info than I put on here (I put the most important things on this thread so it's a bit quicker to get through, but the doc just has more of the same things).

About This Blog
Overview:
Pride-Color-Schemes, as well as the Pride-Flags DA and Ask-Pride-Color-Schemes, are blogs dedicated to collecting all MOGAI terms, flags, and symbols in one place and to make them as accessible as possible. We also help people find terms for themselves as well as help them create new flags.
History:
The Pride Flag Collective (the name of the DA, tumblrs, and Google docs as a whole) was originally started as Pride-Flags on Deviantart by Mod Hermy to help out another pride flag blog and organize all their flags and others. They later created the google docs "dictionary" of terms to help keep track of all the terms without flags (as well as the ones with flags because DA's organization options are terrible). MOGAI-Flags on tumblr came next but was later scrapped for Pride-Color-Schemes because Hermy made it as a separate account and didn't realize you can't add mods to a main blog. Ask-Pride-Color-Schemes was created at the same time to keep PCS as an organized archival blog. For most of the blog it was just Mod Hermy and Mod Face, but when the blog started getting larger and harder to keep up with, they started adding new mods to help out in early February 2017.
Some of our stances:
We try to be as accepting as possible of all identities, even the most unconventional ones that every other blog might turn away. Your gender is yours, and it's not up to us to dictate how "acceptable" it is or not. Obviously, we'll delete/ban obvious trolls, but if we're unsure of something is or not, we will probably add it because it's better to accidentally add a troll term than push a vulnerable person away because their gender sounds too "weird".
We love obscure labels, even the overly specific ones that maybe only one person in the entire world might experience. Many people feel like they need to name every little piece of their identity to be comfortable with themselves and that is no more or less valid than people who ID as something that's used as an umbrella term. Someone with 500 labels is just as accepted here as someone with just one.
There will be next to no "discourse" on this blog and will remain education and positivity only. Any "discoursey" stuff we feel is necessary to talk about will be put below a readmore with generous tags and warnings ahead of time so whoever doesn't want to see it will be able to scroll past without any problems. Any anon hate will immediately be deleted and blocked, don't waste your time trying to convince us of your backwards opinions because it's not going to work.
Aspec people do belong in the community and are welcome here, even heteroromantic aces and heterosexual aros.
You don't need dysphoria to be trans, and your gender doesn't have to deviate wildly from your assigned gender to be valid. An AFAB demigirl is just as valid here as a trans woman. An AMAB Offboy is just as valid here as an agender person.
Queer is a term that many people have reclaimed for themselves and is an important part of many peoples' identities as well as being a major part of the overall MOGAI/LGBTQAI+ communities. We will not call anyone queer who doesn't want to be called it, but we won't be tagging "q-slur" because peoples identites are not slurs. From now on we will also not be censoring other reclaimed slurs as well.
It's ok to question or experiment and realize that you really are just cis or straight, or that you fit under some general label rather than something(s) specific. Our identities can be fluid and there is no reason for you not to drop labels you don't feel describe you anymore, whether it's because you realized they're not right for you, or that your identity changed so you need to come up with new labels to describe it.
Neopronouns are great! She/He pronouns used by nonbinary people are great! It/its pronouns are great! No pronouns are great! Auxiliary pronouns are great for people who might have a hard time with any of the above, but if you're unable to accept any for yourself for any reason then that's ok too!
We prefer the term MOGAI to any other acronyms such as LGBT, GSM, MGSROI, etc. due to it being the most accurate term we know of.
Not /every/ flag added will be strictly MOGAI. We focus on flags regarding orientations, non-cis identities, intersexuality, and non-monoamorous identities, but we are open to adding flags for other unrelated identities that may need representation.
We recognize the connected history of the MOGAI/LGBTQAI+ communities and the Kink/BDSM communities and how we've had similar struggles throughout history. However, we will not be making any flags related to them. We don't want to make this blog 18+, and there are several blogs already dedicated to them like @kinkflagsrus or @bdsmflags

The inspiring MP3 blog
Decoding, On the flip side, is very carefully described during the typical. Most decoders are "bitstream compliant", which implies that the decompressed output that they deliver from a specified MP3 file would be the same, in just a specified degree of rounding tolerance, as the output specified mathematically during the ISO/IEC significant conventional doc (ISO/IEC 11172-3). As a result, comparison of decoders is generally based on how computationally effective They can be (i. http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292 http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292http://manuellbpft.blogkoo.com/the-best-side-of-mp3-9059292 Your not long ago considered items and showcased recommendations › View or edit your searching historical past Free of charge Mp3 Downloads helps you to research, download and hear music which can be licenced as "absolutely free to implement". As of 2010, by far the most prevalent are ID3v1 and ID3v2, and the more a short while ago released APEv2. This really is accompanied by somewhat indicating that this is the MPEG standard and two bits that suggest that layer 3 is used; hence MPEG-1 Audio Layer three or MP3. Immediately after this, the values will differ, with regards to the MP3 file. You can also make mp3 data files by using the mp3 audio codec. .mp3 information do not have a container, so it is best to utilize the dummy container. Over time this issue happens to be fewer of a difficulty as CPU speeds transitioned from MHz to GHz. Encoder/decoder overall hold off will not be defined, meaning there is no Formal provision for gapless playback. Nonetheless, some encoders like LAME can attach further metadata that will permit players which will tackle it to deliver seamless playback. High quality[edit]
